Here we go again with the tire issue. My 03 Aero has been through 4 sets of tires through 100k miles. I have been on two sets of Pirellis, one set of Yokos, and now Kuhmos. I have learned many lessons on this issue;
1. These cars have agressive alignment specs for handling purposes, extra neg. camber on the rears and extra toe-in on the fronts. The rear camber cannot be adjusted. Shocks and springs are probably not the root cause most of the time.
2. Because of these alignment specs, tire choice and rotation schedules are the the best defense. The tread pattern needs to be bi-directional with square type tread blocks on the inside edge and the tires need to be rotated every 3-5k with the modified-cross pattern, preferebly every 3k to minimize the inside edge wear. I now do rotations myself at home.
3. A little extra PSI helps to put more wear towards the middle of the tires too. Of course an alignment should be done first to at least get it into manufactures specs, but there is a special tool needed to adjust the rear toe-in, that most indys don't have.
My latest set of tires have been the Kuhmos ASX's, which are a great value at $83 each right now on Tirerack. I currently have 22k on my set and followed the 5k rotation with 42psi. Unfortunaltely, the 5k was still not often enough as now I have the onset of "cupping" and the 42psi was a bit strong as it wore out the middle too fast. I expect to get anothe 5-7k out of them before the noise gets too bad, but I think I will get another set this time and rotate every 3k, and keep them at 38-39psi and see what happens. I think the Pirelli Neros would also do OK under this type of management but they do cost a bit more.
