Let's say your existing filter is 50% full of crap by the time you change oil. So your oil pressure drop across the filter is "X" pounds. A bigger filter might only be 25% full at the same time (same amount of crap, but larger filter media). Your pressure drop will be only "Y" pounds where Y<<X. Less pressure drop is good - it means your oil pump isn't working as hard and you are not running as close to activating the filter bypass. Therefore bigger filters are gooder.
I just made that up now but I think it sounds good!!!
(in fact, makes sense to me that you would be losing less pressure through larger filter media even when the filters are perfectly clean...)
