How do you know the noise is from the alternator and not an idler bearing which is expected to not last. Most folks replace that at 60K to avoid failure and a tow truck.
Are you using the correct plugs? No need for platinum plugs, the BPCR6ES11's work well and are inexpensiuve. Also note any cylinder to cylinder differences in the plugs.
Tire pressures low? If you have a guage that you have had for years, perhaps it needs to be checked agaist another guage. Some do go bad.
Injectors clean? Techron Concentrate will clean those, and the combustion chambers. It will also help free up sticking rings. Use a 20 ounce bottle if never used before. Oil consumption ok?
On a level road, low winds, engine fully warm, clear the SID at steady speed and watch the MPGs developed. This eliminates variables such as cold starts and city traffic and is the most repeatable thing that you can to to track changes.
Using low octane fuel? That will decrease MPGs. And 10% ethanol fuels can decrease MPGs by 5-6%
Check to see if brakes are dragging, including the hand brake.
Does your temp indicator stay at 9 o'clock? If it drops at highway speeds, the thermostat is stuck open. Low engine temps would kill MPGs.
CELs: Many CELs are kept in the ECU even when the CEL light is then off. These can be read and then you know something about the problem.
Automatic trany? Fluid should have been changed by now.
