Ian,
Are you sure about this? from all the diagrams and photographs that I have seen the 9k/ 9-5 V6 is basically the same engine. There may be slight differences in the block/ head, but nothing that would sustain a sterling reputation for the 9-5 whereas the 9k is supposed to be crap. IIRC the timing belt/ tensioner of the 9-5 retrofits into the 9k V6. Can't see nay differences in the design.
It is different in the way that the 9-5 uses a DI setup, so the valve covers should obviously be different. Don't know whether that's a bonus in terms of reliability.
The 9-5 uses a turbo, and therefor a 'conventional' inlet manifold. The 9k uses this funky VIM (variable length intake manifold) which kicks in at high RPM.
Again, just curious as I see this statement of 'totally different' on the 9k board as well, but from the evidence that I have this seems unlikely. Also, it would have been a mare coincidence if this GM engine would have changed generation simultaneously with the 9k/ 9-5 changeover.
To Mike Lynch: the 9k engine was sourched from Vauxhall UK, not Opel (if that's a difference), so that didn't change for the 9-5 range.
