I recently bought a 2001 9-5, after years of happy 9000 ownership. The 9-5 is a nice car - very refined for a Saab, plenty of power and good mpg with the base turbo 4 (right on the EPA 21-30 rating). I got a stick but after driving it for awhile would probably recommend the auto - it is an excellent box (same Aisin-Warner tranny as Lexus) and is more in keeping with the refined nature of the car.
A 9-5 will robably not be as reliable as a Honda, but is a better, safer car, a factor I will never take lightly again after being hit head-on in my 9000. The best years seem to be 02-03, based on what I have read here. Make sure there are service rec's - regular oil changes with semi or full synthetic are critical in these cars to prevent sludge issues.
