You could also rig up a spare power supply wire (switched) to pin 86 and a ground wire (switched) to pin 85 on that relay.
When the no start condition occurs, keep holding the key in start position and at the same time give the relay a jolt of power to 86 or a jolt of ground to 85.
If the relay decide to close over 30 and 87 (and kick over starter) when extra power is supplied, the gear selector circuit is compromised.
Or if the relay close when ground is supplied to 85, the ground from TWICE is compromised.
