I don't see the problem as long as you keep matching pairs on the same axle. You may sacrifice some absolute handling, but last I checked my drive home was not on the race track. Having two tires lose grip earlier than another two could be a slight advantage in some circumstances as you know to let back, ESP knows to kick in, etc. I can’t speak for the 9-3, but I had a rear tire blowout on windy roads in my 9-5 and I didn’t know it except for the blowout pop. If the car can handle that, how much of an effect could a good Pirellis on one end of the car and good Kuhmos on the other have? Matching all 4 is ideal, but it is not critical if for some period one doesn’t (unless racing, autocrossing, etc.).
