as a pilot with an instrument rating, I will dissent from the view that the night panel is "cool". In flying, this would be known as partial panel failure. The type of lighting and color and intensity is very carfully thought out so the night vision is not affected any more than necessary. One difference in flying is that the pilot's vision is far more needed inside the plane than outside. For me, turning the panel rheostat down to a low level more than takes care of the job. Saab's argument that the night panel is aviation inspired is largely marketing hype. There are many aircraft instruments that will flag an abnormal condition with an intensified light level, or by triggering an annunciator light in a different location, that calls the pilot's attention to some area of the panel, but as far as turning off the lighting in instruments, I'm not aware of that type of lighting. Perhaps another pilot who has been in more types of aircraft will contradict me, but generally speaking, you want to be able to see everything and monitor it regularly, not just have it light up once something has gone wrong.
