It really doesn't matter what brand of older European highline car your considering for the $8k pricerange. They can all be fraught with uncertainty and expense. Even a 1st model year 1999 9-5 is likely still newer and more reliable than just about any other car in the price range. You'd be getting way older or way more miles in a Benz or BMW more expensive repairs too.
Show me another executive class car that's still in current production that you can get for $8k ish. BMWs and Benzs in that price range are two generations old, everthing else at least one generation. Some of the Japanese competition didn't even exist.
I quote from the very bottom of every BB page "This is a problem solving forum for over 250,000 Saab owners, so expect to see problems discussed here even though our cars are generally very reliable".
A boring car for $8k isn't likely to be all that much newer and likely not lower mileage either, and even boring normally reliable cars can suck money too.
