That's pretty much how I've worked it out. You need a car, how you pay for it is up to you.
I love cars, but don't care about having the latest and greatest. I'm also a tightwad (my wife is worse!) so don't want to spend a lot on cars, or have payments forever. So we by used and run them a long time. Being self-employed with a somewhat variiable income its also nicer for the cash flow, and there are more fun things to do with the cash saved, like build our cabin at the lake. I think in the long run this is cheaper. Some of our more affluent friends take exactly the same approach, even the ones who can drive pretty much anything they want.
Other friends, though, absolutley LOVE leasing. They like not having repairs to think about and always having a new car under warranty. Still others buy and trade every 5 years.
I do like not having payments on our older cars, and as long as repairs are reasonable (less than a new monthly nut) this works.
