Proactive repair or just crazy..... Posted by MI-Roger [Email] ![]() ![]() |
My 2000 lpt is rapidly approaching the 180,000 mile point and I just ordered a new water pump for it. I have no evidence of coolant leakage but would rather perform what I consider to be an inevitable repair during the warm summer months and not during the winter. I already replaced the upper radiator hose and thermostat within the past year, and will be replacing the lower hose and 180-degree return hose when I do the pump. I also ordered a new pump adapter/nose piece, the spool with two O-rings.
What about the by-pass valve? How common is replacement of these parts?
What about the catalytic converter? My goal is to drive this car to 300,000 miles or more (people still stop me to admire the car thinking it is new!). I would love to justify a 3-inch downpipe to my wife because of a plugging converter. Has anyone ever had a converter fail on a 9-5 due to age and miles?
Speaking of installing performance parts on the sly, I may still buy a new turbo inlet to install as part of the water pump reassembly.
