looking at your backround shows that you've had a few saabs. therefor you also know that all engine swaps don't cost the worse case senerio. many of us ARE DIY and even have friends with Saab shops! he just isn't around this week to answer my sludge question.
i put CPO and extend warranties at about the same level. to pay $2000-4000 for insurance that still has it share of headaches when needed is debatable.
I'm looking at saving $5000 over KKB and $5000-6000 over CPO on this car (typical for saabs)...so if we had a low failure rate percentage (roll the dice) and a good test or two for the condition along with some service history, it would most likly be a great investment. i don't subscribe to the nervous nilly comment of yours for car buying theories...my mechanic has seen sludge to...but it doesn't actually subscribe that this is anything new either. he says he saw it with 900 and 9000 if the oil was not changed every 5000-7500 miles...
You are right that there is much info on sludge but after reading 50 artical i'm still not sure of the technical cause, therefor anyone with a good link to a tech thread would be appricate.
i personally think that fact more and more cars get leased has to impact this stat. many people whol lease do nothing but gas for 3 years (few oil changes) even with free service. my buddy has seen it a few times for sure.
