My daily driver is a '96 9K CSE 5 speed. My wife has an '03 9-5 Linear SportWagon. They are similar yet different. I also have a '95 9K CS auto my daughter drives.
I like the space and big greenhouse on the 9K, and the hatch without it being a wagon. The cars feel different: The 9-5 has a lighter, softer, but maybe a little tauter feel, but then it has 45K to the 127K on the 9K--that makes a difference in feel. They still feel like Saabs, if you know what I mean. The difference isn't as great as it is between a C900 and a 9000, but the 9-5 feels more like a modern car. But because it is a Euro car, you feel more of the road than you do in a Japanese car. I think this is good, but Yota lovers would disagree.
What I really notice is the difference in NVR (Noise Vibration Harshness), as the 9-5 has the advantages of much newer engineering in that area.
Fuel mileage is a bit better in the 9-5, but only on the highway. If my 9K died and I couldn't find another I'd get a 9-5 and be happy, but I still think the 9000 was the best Saab ever made. And I do think the 9K wins the overall durability contest, given some of the sludge and PCV issues on the 9-5. If you get one be sure to change the oil a lot and only use top quality stuff.
Turbo is still great. I drive the 9-5 in Sport Mode a lot and even with 185 hp it still has enough giddyup for most things, but I'd prefer an Aero.
