On snow and ice, and especially packed down already driven on poorly plowed roads, studded tires make a huge difference. At 85+mph on dry road they may be noisy and not as responsive, but they are a huge advantage in the poor snowy weather. I would love to drive those mountain roads west of Boulder with studded snow tires in the winter.
