I don't know why Saab started to use the Platinum in the Aero first but their reasoning might be that an Aero owner drive the car a lot harder and that will wear the plugs quicker.
But they also extended the change interval to 40K in 2002 for the Aero instead of 30K as it is for all the other models.
Standard copper plugs will in most cases (driving styles) last 30K miles without having to regap them but they are worn at the end of the life span and some performance are lost.
A lot of poster here on the board are in tune with their car and wants the best at all times and since it is easy enough to extract the plugs and regap or replace them, they do that. But the owners that leave everything to the shop to handle don't really loose much either.
After what I understand, the dealers are now installing the Platinum plugs in all newer Saabs when they get serviced.
After all, many other modern cars have plugs that last 75-100K before the first replacement, but those cars also don't have the sensitive Trionic ignition module with all its built in features.
