get the outer spring clips installed properly? These have to pass beneath the "ears" on the edge of the caliper and not on top of the ears. These are a real PITA to reinstall properly and are usually considered the hardest part of a D-I-Y brake job. Mis-installation will cause weak brakes and poor stoping.
If you don't recall any difficulty re-installing these spring, I would have to guess they are not positioned properly and are the cause of your displeasure with your new pad/rotor combination.
