I tend to disagree. I don't think it's about perception. As a consumer I demand more than a car which won't strand me and which will perform well in a crash. To me those are the basics, the fundamentals, that all cars need to meet. US brands do that just fine. No, I want my car to get reasonably good mpg, to have good road feel, and to have interior materials that don't scream "cheap flimsy crap." Sadly, I think the US brands lag far behind the Japansese and the Europeans in all of these areas. Even the Japanse economy cars like the new Fit and Versa feel very substantial for "cheap cars" and are a pleasure to drive. Conversely, I recently drove a Cobalt for 2 days -- it was awful to drive, to be in, and to look at.

My $.02. Apologies to those who love their Cobalts.
