My experience, and my opinion... (very Very Long) Posted by Johnson [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Why domestic brands are suffering, J, Sat, 14 Oct 2006 06:32:31 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Now I have NO IDEA if this fits across the board, but I have done a lot of car shopping in the last two years, first for my car (ended up with my saab from a used car dealer), then for my older brother's car, and then for my younger brothers. And I noticed two major differences between "american" cars and "japanese" cars (I use the qoutes because most of the jap cars are made here and most of the ameri cars are made in asia... go figure!) These major differences is how I felt at the dealersip. at the Cadilac/hummer/saab dealership I feel like everybody there does not know the difference between the front end and back end of a car! from the sales people to the service writer. Incompitent does not begine to describe them. This does not go for just the saab people but for the caddy people and the hummer people... It is discusting.
I went to the Chevy dealership with 10k C A S H in my pocket. I had a car I wanted to buy at their lot, Pay the cash, get money for my trade it, and finance the rest, They harrased me, told me I was too stupid to to know what i wanted, REFUSED to let me pay cash, or even look at my trade in car and wanted me to finance everything. I walked out of there laughing.
I went to a ford dealership, and was there 45 min before anybody came and talked to me, and it was the guy that drives cars from one side of the lot to the other. I never saw a sales guy once.
The Dodge poeple were nice but not helpful, and they had no idea what their inventory is. I had no confidence in them.
at the "asian" dealerships my experience was completly different, and tended to be the same. I went to Honda, Hyundai, Mazda, and Toyota. The sales people came out and The first words out of their mouths were "how can I help you? did you have any thing in mind, do you know what you are looking for, did you have any questions?" They were helpful, friendly, They did not harrass me, they did not push me, they did not haggle, they tried to give (my brother in this case) the best deal they could on his trade in (1992 ford ranger with a cracked block, gave him 2k for a trade in) It was such a pleasent experience. He had his eye on some american made cars, but after the expereinces we had at many many dealerships, he will never own one. My parents tell the story of when they were buying a car shortly after they got married, and went to a subaru dealership, and the way that they were treated was so bad they will NEVER own a subaru. My dad is even in love with the new STi but he will never ever own one because of ONE experience. and I will probably never own a SAAB again unless the dealerships around here clean up their acts. I am sorry but to be treated as I have been is unexcusable. and That is why I think american cars are not selling over the japs, it is not the make/styling/build/quality, it is the customer service. People with buy the junkiest stuff on earth if it meets one of two things: if it is butt cheep, or if it comes with excelent customer service. a friend and I got computers around the same time. His and mine are almsot exactly the same in everything, I spend about 1500 on mine, he spent 8k. why did he spend the 8k for what he could have spend 1500 for? service, pure and simple. ( sorry for the rant...)
