Sounds like fuel to me. Like its not getting any. When my dic when on my 99 after work I cam out and crank a few times. wouuld not start did not even seem like it would catch. But what I did not is a smell of raw gas. Then poped the hood and cranked one more time and noticed smoke from the dic. That more or less answered what was wrong. Then a few weeks ago I knew that I was pushing it and the gas light had been on for a long time. But i was watching the dte on the sid and showed 34 miles left. I was rolling down the highway at 80 mph in the left lane and it started dieing and the check engine light started flashing and I luckly was at an exit. Hopped off the road and then got to the end of the ramp. I knew there was gas at the other side of the highway. Tried to get to start a few times but started and spuddered out. Also now the sid displayed 0 dte strange. Put in gas and was fine next morning solid check light went off. So I think that the sid dte calculates it from a measurement of gas from when you start the car. I was on a steep hill and it must have fooled it into thinking i had more gas left. Not trusting that again.
So in short If you do not smell gas when cranking then you might have a gas problem.
