I live in the Yakima area so regularly cross Snoqualmie during the winter. I purchased chains from Les Schwab because you can return them for a full refund if unused at the end of the season. I've never used the chains, but the State Patrol will require them to be carried at times (and even installed).
I do use snow tires--Blizzaks purchased at Tirerack.com--on 16" wheels because the stock 17" wheels/tires on my Aero were almost useless in the snow. I believe that the owners manual does not recommend chains on the 17" wheels, although I suppose they would work if necessary. My own recommendation is a second set of tires & wheels, or even a rental car set up for winter driving, depending on how often you will be in the snow. I won't drive my Aero in the snow with the stock tires, but it's great with snow tires.
