As a former 900 driver, I will say that the 9-5 series (my first being a new sedan in 1999 followed by an '02 Aero SW)is simply more modern and bigger.
Purchased new, the '02 Aero wagon has proven the best value among sports wagons offered at the time. The relevant (imprecise) calculation was some combination of performance, handling (all weather conditions), crash safety, mileage, comfort, capacity (seating & cargo), reliability and cost (acquisition, operation, maintenance and depreciation) - all contemplated through the lens of a reality which included wife and kid.
Note: Because I intended to drive the car well beyond its current 75,000 miles, I understood my actual cost of depreciation to be based on maintenance cost rather than re-sale value; this may not the case for you. However, the loss on resale is so enormous that the depreciation (in the event of near-term resale of a new Saab) changes the value equation pretty substantially. On the other hand, this pushes the result of the calculation in a different direction if you purchase second hand.
