When the CEL light indicates that the computer knows something is wrong. The computer stores that as codes. You can get the codes read for free at Autozone (and others as well)
A temp gauge that reads zero indicates that your thermostat sticking open. This causes the engine to run cooler. If the temp is below a certain threshold the computer will instruct the gauge to read zero.
additionally if the engine runs below that threshold for a prescribed amount of time, the computer will set a code and turn on the CEL.
of course a bad temp sender can also cause the computer to "think" the engine is cold. this will cause the gauge to read zero and eventually a code (and CEL) will be set.
so, yes, its either the coolant temp sensor or the thermostat. The 'stat is more likely to fail, but it can be either. and on occasion its both!
