It is not fair to ask people if it is safe to drive your car when we don't know the reason for the light to come on.
You won't beleive how many question like that I get and where they want me to assure them over the phone without ever seeing the car if they can make the trip safely or not.
It might be a minor problem or it might be a major one waiting to happen.
It is hundreds of reasons for the same check engine light to come on and in this case, the only thing we have to go by is the temp gauge drop when the light came on.
It could be as easy as a coolant temp sensor starting to go bad, or an instrument cluster having a glitch in the electrical circuit boards. Those will probably not make the car overheat but they could, since the coolant temp sensor is used to turn on the cooling fans when standing still, idling.
If it is a failing coolant thermostat, it might very well leave you stranded.
So just be prepared for the worst having your AAA card handy if you drive, and if you make it back and forth, it wasn't that big of a deal.
Make sure it is coolant in the expansion tank and look for high temp readings or steam coming out of the engine compartment and sop the car right away if it does.
