Poster, a stretched, worn timing chain is also noisy, and the noise is not occasional. As soon as warm, you hear a constant whir from pass side of engine at idle. You can do the mechanic's stethoscope bit and take a screwdriver to the block or valve cover, and you can def. hear chains slopping around. To be certain, you should pull the chain tensioner in back of block, and measure. But it is not only the timing chain making the noise, it is also the balance shaft chain, which is actually more noisy. On the 9-5, working on anything on that side of the engine is a real chore. Haynes considers work done there as engine removal work, not engine in car work (except oil pump replacement) Timing , balance chain and all the bits is not something to do unless you need to. If you are pulling engine, then you sure could check everything, and replace as needed. You say it is rubbing the guide in valve cover. Have you checked that? That is the one bit that is inexpensive and very easy to replace. Good luck, and regards, Tom S.
