No matter what kind of tires you have, spinning them on slippery surfaces are not going to get you anywhere. Obviously getting proper snow tires will help, but your post about burning your rubber and gas to get up a hill indicates that you need practice in snow on level ground as well as snow tires or at least all weather tires with decent tread depth. In either case, don't push it until you have some experience or you'll find that you'll need more repairs to that '01.
