You'll need to put them on the rear wheels. That's what I've always heard. I know it sounds counter-intuitive, but if you have no traction in the rear, but good traction up front, your ass will be sliding everywhere.
Your old tires are so bad, you really need to get 4 snows. If you put the "better" old tires up front and the new ones on the rear, you're still going to have traction problems.
In our fun New England winters, you really need to get dedicated snow tires. The only "all-season" (note the quotes) tire that I would trust is the Nokian WR. I run 4 Gislaveds on dedicated snow rims (Hakkas before these) and have never had a problem getting up hills that even AWD vehicles sometimes can't.
