Dave W is right. The Koreans are doing just what the Japanese did 30 years ago. And they have the advantage of newer technologies and seeing all the mistakes other carmakers have made. Hyundais aren't the s**tboxes they used to be.
I wouldn't buy one, but if you go in knowing that it will be boring to drive, won't be worth much when you go to sell it, but also won't have cost much to own, then a used Hyundai isn't all bad. Ditto for a used Nissan or Yota. It doesn't sound like you are in a position to handle car repair surprises, so you might need to go to the dark side until you get your practice going... and can come back with a new Aero.
