No brakes in reverse

Hi All,
I've been away a while, but it seems things are much the same around abouts.
I'm having a problem with my 2000 9-5 Aero Estate (auto) that has started in the last few weeks. In the morning at first startup, there is almost no braking power and a hard pedal when in reverse.
In park the pedal feels normal and it goes down maybe half way with a moderate pedal pressure, you have to have the brakes on to get out of park anyhow. Shifting into reverse you can feel the pedal gradually go 'hard' over a period of a few seconds, and braking force is dramatically reduced.
Shifting into neutral brings the pedal back to normal, shifting into drive is the same, brakes seem fine. But go back into reverse again and the pedal will go hard again.
In normal driving everything seems fine, so I think the booster and master cylinder themselves are fine.
Mine has what I think is a vacuum pump on the end of the inlet camshaft, I think this is not on all models. But it would appear that there must be some vacuum connection between the braking system and gearbox, given that this is certainly related to gear position.
Any thoughts? I really must get myself a WIS...
TIA
Steve
