Anders,
thanks for your help.
I just bought the car, private sale. It's a 2000 SE. On Nov 21,'06, dealer changed ( previous owner) water pump, serpentine, and some gaskets and filters for a total of $1855.CDN. One month later, Dec 21 '06, they replaced the t-stat with a whole bunch of gaskets and bolts. (90412126,90501653,90501652,9121999,24455322). $766CDN. Three and a half hours labor. job done because Check engine light was on, t-stat code. Found leak around t-stat housing.
When I bought the car, 10 days ago, I brought it to an indie ( Carmine, at Sylcar) who noticed some dried green ( coolant) aft of the t-stat housing. Couldn't see any leak. Yesterday, I did my first somewhat long distance run ( about 60 miles) some at 100 mph. I could smell the coolant outside when back home, so I removed the engine cover again. There was some fresh coolant aft of the t-stat. I added about 4 ounces to the recovery reservoir.
This morning, I cleaned the area around the t-stat and dried it. I then poured a bottle of Bar's Leak in the reservoir AFTER I emptied it, and then let the engine run for about 15 min at 2K rpm, fans worked. For a minute or so, there was a funny noise around the water pump area, I guess she didn't like the Bar's Leak for a minute. Then I went for a 10 miles run on the highway, some of it at good (...) speed. Back home, I removed the cover again and could not see any seepage of coolant. looked bone dry.
The waranty on the repair is over, as it was 3 months or 8K km. There is only 4.5K km driven since repair but 5 months have passed.
I'm now a little scared to go anywhere outside Montreal for a long distance run. I will check the reservoir level in the next few days and see from there. I'm scheduled at 8:30 AM tomorrow with Carmine. Do we have to replace the t-stat again?
many thanks,
Bernard
