All Cars have issues, no matter who manufactures them. I have had my 9-5 3 years and 30K miles and have been pleased with my dealers and have found the problems I had early on a little annoying (ECU and Turbo seal from PCV valve failure) but not overwhelming so. My brakes and battery are just fine.
My 9-5 has had fewer problems than my wife's 10 month old New Beatle with 6K miles, and my 9-5 has many more features to break.
As for the plastic dash, European cars have had a plastic dash standard since 1998 on the lowest trim level.
