I wouldn't remove the center pulley. It's not that heavy, and if you throw a belt out in the middle of nowhere and the only one around is a "long belt", it gives you one more option.
Based on the package my new belt came in, the long belt cross references to some popular Ford, GM, and Chrysler engines, and (it appears from the belt layout) the 9000. Might explain why there's a center pulley in the first place - so a single belt can be ordered for the spare parts departments. That would be a pretty lame reason to design in another idler pulley, though.
