The auto is an outstanding one, well suited to the high torque turbo and has a sport button which raises the shift points and lowers the kick down points to better satisfy die hard stick drivers. There is also the manual setting for the auto the invokes the steering wheel mounted shift paddles, but I find it awkward to use as you must carefully select M on the quadrant first. Not nearly as intuitive as the slap shifter in a 9-3SS with the paddles.
The stick is kind of a sloppy one, not the snick-snick delight of a BMW or Miata linkage, but OK, and the response of the turbo four is a little sloppy too especially just off idle. These engine characteristics are hidden perfectly by the auto.
Many die-hard manual folks are happy with the auto it's so good and there's nothing disappointing about the manual, it's just not as good as some.
