My experience has been that the type (directional or not) has a lot to do with this. The original Michelin MXV4's wore perfectly even until 40K. I replaced them with a HP perfomance directional tire. They wore poorly with cupping being the main problem. I have written about this before. My Master Tech had cautioned me about using directional tires and I did use at least a couple more sets before I learned my lesson. The rear seems to do ok with MXV4s or eqivelants from the cupping point of view. I also had gone plus zero with 225-50-16's for a long time but am reverting to the delivered 215-55-16 as there are far more choices available in that size now.
