Is my "new to me/used" motor timing already off??

I am putting in a used motor in my '99 9-5 SE V6. Actually it is a 2001 Saturn Vue motor(L81) with 70K miles t-boned in a wreck. Swapping of all parts to this point has been pretty painless(although slow).
The new motor looks to have the original timing belt on it. My original motor was destroyed by the timing belt slipping so I don't want to experience that problem again. I spend the extra $$ and got the Baum Timing Belt Tool Kit so I could do the job like a professional. After turning the crank and scratching my head I finally concluded that the "new/used" motor must have skipped a few teeth because I can't get everything to line up.
First of all, is there enough wiggle room with the original timing belt that the motor still is in good shape(no valve damage)? I pulled all the spark plugs but didn't see any visible damage. If I'm correct in my assessment, it seem like all I would have to do is lock the cams in the correct location with the cam locks and then adjust the crank to top dead center and them install the new timing belt and pulleys. I'm a little nervous about all this and just want your guys opinions. I would cry like my girlfriend does(just kidding) if the car didn't run!!
Thanks,
Matt
