The standard racks are black, square, anodized/painted aluminum - this is what we had on our 2000 9-5 wagon. They fit onto the rails and lock at each end with a key - 4 locks total. Takes a few minutes to remove or mount from the rails, as you have to unlock, then unscrew each of 4 end cap locking pieces. Definitely not "quick-release." We left the bars on all the time, once installed. The black finish looks just fine. Any of the square-bar Thule accessories fit perfectly, but take a bit more fiddling with to attach. The square-bar system and all of its fittings tend to look a bit "clunkier" and less sleek than their C-track cousins.
The aluminum racks have the fancier bright trim, and the C-shaped rails use different adapters to connect stuff. Thule's RB53 bars look exactly like these Saab bars (probably made by Thule anyhow...) It does not look like these racks can be locked to the car. You need to use the newer series of "rapid" (quick-release) Thule accessories with these bars.
As far as mounting a box goes, I don't think there's much difference. Check the Thule site to compare box-fitting methods for each style.
