Thanks.
We bought our late-lamented 2000 9-5 wagon off eBay. The sellers were two guys who bought cars at auction, all with remaining factory warranty, and sold them on eBay. They assured me that the exterior & interior were spotless, and the IRIS report and Carfax looked good. When the car arrived from Missouri, it was perfect except for a cracked foglight housing. The sellers immediately agreed to either get us a used assembly at n/c, or to do whatever would be fair. I suggested splitting the cost of a new one, which I could have installed at the dealer right away. They immediately sent me a Paypal for their half of the $$.
Even though I have a bit of evidence to the contrary (see below), buying a CPO Saab from a dealer is pretty tame, I think. Again, clean Carfax and good IRIS are both mandatory. While there's no way I would've driven or flown to Missouri for the first wagon, I did think about flying to Boston for this one. With the airlines these days, this would really mean a 2-day trip, with winter weather no less (our snows are in the garage...) Not my cup of tea.
I had looked at a number of other wagons - lots and lots of them - and the best prospects either had accidents on the Carfax and/or painting/body work. The one that I liked best had a very odd IRIS report: a leased 1-owner vehicle that never saw the dealer until 24K miles. No 30-day check, no documented oil changes, nada for 2+ years of driving. Far too risky for me.
The Saab dealer who sold me my CPO'd Aero, 90 miles away, delivered the car (I picked it up) without much detailing. The salesman tried to rip me off by giving me a single key/remote, refusing to acknowledge what the CPO report clearly states. I had to call SaabUSA, who took care of it over the phone; a couple days later I received a new key/remote in the mail, with a note telling me to take it to me local dealer for programming, n/c. I also got a couple of sheepish, apologetic phone calls from the salesman and from the owner of the dealership. The dealer (Caddy/Saab)went out of business a year or so later. But the car has been absolutely wonderful over the nearly 3 years I've owned it.
