I bet your torn carpet spot on the driver's side is exactly in the lower left front corner where the carpet meets from three directions (floor, front sloping firewall and side bolster). I got my replacement used online from "you-know-where"!! Nonetheless, the same damn thing is happening as the original carpet. A hole is appearing as the aged carpet backing doesn't seem to hold up and starts to split and the carpet pile just disintegrates. The "dried Jello" carpet backing just can't hold up in this location. I hope to still get the carpet piece out before it is unpatchable.. I had problems with the original piece having the side bolster section tear out at the hole punch require for anchorage with the plastic trim fastener. Reinforcing it with a folded over a cut piece of that heavy duty theft proof clear plastic product packaging and some Goop worked fine, but I have yet to try this for the hole in the floor corner.
As for piecing and seams, the front and rear carpet pieces overlap under the seats. You'll have to unbolt the driver's seat for this, and undo the screws for lifting up the shifter and hand brake center console to release the right hand edge of the front driver's carpet piece.
Best of Luck,
Kirk D.
