1999 9-5 I4, 115k miles, timing chain tensioner measures 14mm - low volume rattle mainly at cold start. Oil changed at 6k intervals, Saab semi syn till 80k and Mobil 1 since then. Burns .5 quarts between changes, turbo is orginal, engine accelerates smoothly and gas mileage is 30+ at cruising. PCV updates were done shortly afer each version came out, it has had no 6 for close to a year.
No evidence of sludge under valve cover or in oil pan with coat hanger. The cam sprockets show little wear at this point.
So today I tested compression, it measured 172 lbs in 2 cylinders, 175 in the other 2, taken when engine at operating temp. I do not know what the factory specs are for this engine.
Anyways I'm trying to decide what to do about the timing chain. Some options:
- Continue to drive without repair. Has anyone done this and if so what is the progression of noise/wear until no longer feasible to drive - looking for projections on miles.
- Have shop repair - WIS says 7 hrs of labor with engine in car, I'm wondering what a typical repair cost would be for this.
- Repair myself. Did a timing chain on my 9000 which wore due to defective tensioner. Replaced chain & tensioner only at 150k , no noise or issues till car was wrecked at 225K . The 9000 was simple, judging by the WIS and comments on the board the repair on this engine is difficult.
I would likely buy a new car (likely Jap - my wife has a 2004 ARC and it's had it's share of warranty work) I would repair the 9-5 over time and likely give it to my son, the car itself is in pretty good shape.
So what would you do or advise me to do ?
thanks
