The Mitsubishi TD04 in the Aero can last just about forever. The less robust Garrett GT17 in the LPT can last anywhere between 30k and 200k miles-ish according to the anecdotal data supplied here. I wouldn't muck with yours unless it is already showing signs of failure.
Turbo failure is announced by clouds of blue smoke (bad seals) or screeching noise on boost (bad bearings). The car is more-or-less drivable in the first case (embarassing, uses oil, and hard on catalytic converter) and non-driveable in the second, unless the adrenaline rush of risking small metal turbo parts spread through your engine seems appealing.
