Often there will be ears or bosses, or unidentified holes in transmissions or engines that are there solely to help carry, or support, or otherwise make it easier for the manufacturer to assemble the unit, or to help marry the unit to the car. Being where this one is, it could well be a support for the motor/trans while the subframe and suspension were on the "cart" in the factory.
If you've never seen the way they assemble modern Saabs, the body gets all of its bits, and the suspension, exhaust, fuel system, engine, trans & front subframe are all built up on a "cart" (ok, more like a small truck, but you get the idea). At one point in the process, the body is lifted high, and then the cart is brought to it and the undercarriage lifted into position in the body, and the car is now mostly complete.
