Some help please with getting the V6 Tstat out

So I got all the parts and had no problems taking the manifolds off. Eased the turbo pipe against the radiator and loosened the dipstick tube.
This gives ample room to move the thermostat pipe in and out a bit. But no matter what I do I cannot seem to be able to separate the thermostat housing from the pipe. It actually feels quite loose and rotates as far as this would be possible with the thermostat stuck between the heads. But I feel I could wiggle and turn and pull for hours, but the thermostat will not come off the pipe...
It is annoying there is so little room to stick your hands or tools.
For today I have given up...
Is there something I do wrong? I did not take the upper radiator hose off the pipe as this proved alsmost impossible with the little room there is & it is so thight, but still I figure it should be doable, as one cannot pull out the Tstat and pipe as a whole anyway. The flange of the Tstat will simply not clear the head.
Please help!
