When you say you "loosened the dipstick tube" did you completely remove the bolt that holds the water pipe, dipstick tube, and engine lift? If not, I don't think you're going to have enough room to wiggle the pipe out of the thermostat housing. If you leave the dipstick tube in the block, you'll have to rotate the pipe and the dipstick tube to be able to pull the pipe out past the dipstick tube. It's kind of hard to explain, but if you look at it you'll see what I mean.
I'm not sure you'll be able to do it without disconnecting the upper radiator hose as well as the smaller hose. There are two o-rings on the thermostat end of the pipe that you'll need to replace, and it may be difficult to do that without completely removing the pipe.
