How much bite do you want? Posted by MI-Roger [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: My Brakes Suck. Any Recommendations?, B Millar ![]() ![]() |
Brake feel is somewhat subjective, but lousy brakes are no fun - and possibly unsafe.
I have used Mintex "Red Box" pads on my 2000 since about the 80,000 mile point. The factory front pads wore out at 55K, I put something on (can't remember what) that I did not like, so I replaced all pads and all rotors at 80K with Zimmermann X-drilled rotors (for the boy-racer in me) and the Mintex pads. The pads have been replaced once since then, the rotors will be replaced in the next month (my car currently has 219,000 miles).
Green Stuff pads have been used by many, some love them and others hate them. The Akebono Ceramic pads seem to be the most commonly used and best liked. Reportedly they produce almost zero dust!
The "Red Box' pads are a metallic or semi-metallic pad. I am very satisfied with their bite, but they do produce some dust (although much less than the factory pads!) and they are prone to random brake squeal due to the metal filings in the compound.
