Posted about a month ago how a change of jobs has led me to commute 95 miles 1-way for the next little bit. My curiosity had me wondering if dropping from my normal 91 octane to 89 octane would be beneficial to save a few bucks.
Data: Hwy 401 (Oshawa, ON to Cambridge, ON) in an east-west direction.
2002 9-5 Aero with 77k miles; now 80k miles.
speed: highway average of 73mph.
Gas used: 91 octane Petro Canada/89 octane petro canada
oil change just prior to commute increase: Mobil 1 5W30
Feb 4 - Feb 15 had 91 octane = 29.1 MPG average (then cleared)
Feb 15 - Feb 26 had 89 octane = 28.2 MPG average (now cleared)
With a few marginal weather differences and the same 90/10 hwy/city ratio.
I'm sticking with 91 octane. why mess with a good thing.
