I think your intuition about car dealer-offered extended warranties is correct. Rather than overpay for a warranty that amounts to nothing more than very limited catastrophic insurance, take a look at a wear-and-tear extended warranty (like http://www.warrantydirect.com/). You'll get what you pay for, but they are not cheap. I opted against it when I bought my 9-5, but I think this coverage is slightly better than Saab's certified pre-owned, and you can take your car to any mechanic you choose.

As far as deciding between the two wagons you're considering, I'm really happy with my '03 Arc sedan that has the V6 engine. The other finalist, incidentally, for me was an '04 Arc with the 210 or 220? HP 4 cylinder. I liked the later a lot, but the car looked like it had been neglected on lease, and as others have said, the reliability of these cars correlates to how well they are maintained.
