You’re interest in adding a gauge as a means of monitoring conditions under the hood prompted me to write. Hopefully, the following is of some value.
Your decision to add a voltmeter is a good one. It'll give you an increase in the ability to see problems developing before they strand you.

I wanted to share with you my rational for installing a voltmeter AND oil pressure gauge, something I've done on the Saab's I've owned going back through 9000's and 900's. Earlier Saab's offered a place for them and a gauge panel that held three gauges, a feature I always appreciated.

The voltmeter gives you an early warning, in many instances, regarding battery or alternator failure, before you get stranded. Even if stranded, the components that have failed is the extent of the expense you'll incur, regardless of whether you're warned in advance.

This is not the case with a failure in oil pressure. If sludge buildup is the culprit, the oil pressure drops slowly over an extended period of time, LONG BEFORE THE OIL PRESSURE LIGHT COMES ON. Without an oil pressure gauge, the oil pressure light is the only warning, occurring when oil pressure has dropped from 30-40psi to 6psi, while you're driving down the road. Low oil pressure (say slightly above 6psi versus a more normal 35psi), does irreparable wear damage to the engine. The price is the need to replace an engine because you had no advance warning.

Over time you get very used to the range of oil pressures indicated on the gauge under various driving and weather conditions. Yes, oil pressure does drop when you're driving in slow traffic and the temperature is 90°F.
In January 2003, at 106K miles one of the pulleys on my 2000 9-5 disintegrated. I was driving to Westborough, MA via the Mass Pike. It was 6°F. The alternator light and the lack of power steering was the first symptom; the serpentine belt not engaged with the water pump was the hint that driving was out of the question without risk of damaging the engine. A 65 mile AAA tow to a dealer for repairs was the result.

Saab recommended a belt and pulleys change at 60K; I thought that I'd wait until 120K miles.

After this incident, I started changing the belt and pulleys every 60K miles until I replaced the car at 280K miles.
