The correct/intended post follows.
In January 2003, at 106K miles one of the pulleys on my 2000 9-5 disintegrated. I was driving to Westborough, MA via the Mass Pike. It was 6°F. The alternator light and the lack of power steering was the first symptom; the serpentine belt not engaged with the water pump was the hint that driving was out of the question without risk of damaging the engine. A 65 mile AAA tow to a dealer for repairs was the result.
Saab recommended a belt and pulleys change at 60K; I thought that I'd wait until 120K miles.
After this incident, I started changing the belt and pulleys every 60K miles until I replaced the car at 280K miles.
