Experience and an Opinion: Posted by Herb Hirsch [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Any experience w/Saab navigation system and Bluetooth?, Saabpilot ![]() |
BLUETOOTH: From Saab's standpoint you can have either OnStar or Bluetooth; they both use the same TEL1 cable. So, if you install Bluetooth you'll have to unplug OnStar to do so. UHL Electronics used to offer an electronic switch for Saab's which supported concurrent operation of OnStar and a hands-free kit. However, they are no longer advertising on the internet.
I installed Saab's Bluetooth kit in my 2007 9-5 Aero myself, and I wouldn't be without it. IMHO I would pursue an Aero without OnStar. The dealer I bought my car from wasn't ordering OnStar because no one wanted it; Bluetooth was much more popular.
NAVIGATION: A built-in navigation system is very expensive. I have a Garmin 200W that does what I need. Already, I have downloaded updated software and maps through my PC directly into my GPS.....free. I got the sand-filled stanchion for my unit from Garmin; it makes positioning and removal a non-event. The idea of being able to set the unit up for new places I'm going in the house while I'm sitting at my PC and the ability to place it in the car I'm going to use is something I like. Finally, I only paid $225.00 for my unit from Amazon.
One final point....if you get a Saab without navigation you will get XM radio. I used to drive 50K miles each year; I would never be without XM. In 2000 I installed XM and a hands-free kit (subsequently replaced by Bluetooth) in my 2000 9-5. On my new 9-5, XM is now integrated in the audio system.
