I have alot of the same opinions.... Posted by Saabpilot [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Experience and an Opinion:, Herb Hirsch ![]() ![]() |
Bluetooth is much more important to my daily driving and my often 2 - 3 hour trips than Onstar, although I like the idea of automatic Onstar notification in an airbag deployment. I have two vehicles with analog Onstar (my '03 9-5 and my '04 Trailblazer) and I was sorely disappointed when the only solution to the demise of analog was to offer me $1,000 off a new vehicle (I wonder if that coupon is still good?). That issue kind of soured me on Onstar. When I told the "blond booth babes" at the SOC about this last year, you would have thought I was speaking a foreign language...they couldn't understand why the $1,000 coupon didn't make me happy ("you want me to throw my car away and buy another because the Onstar doesn't work any more?")
I used the handsfree harness on my '03 like you described...I unplugged the Onstar and plugged in the Motorola IHF1000. I have a photo or two of this on my Saabnet profile as a matter of fact.
I,too like my portable Garmin and it's ability to go between multiple cars. I have mine as hard wired as possible - I have a duplex cigarette lighter jack inside the fuse box area of the car on the left side of the dash, tied in to a circuit (can't remember which one) and the excess cable is tucked inside there. I have one of the quick release mounts that's affixed to the dash and it works great. I could do the same in a new car, but would prefer the built in unit if I could afford it. My boss has a new Infiniti that has nav, backup camera and Bluetooth all in the same system...very impressive. But it reacts poorly to voice prompts...it can't seem to find simple street names like "Elm" unless you type them.
FYI, the 9-3 Aero I drove today had navigation AND XM. I agree that I like XM for long trips and for the ability to listen to certain news stations I like...I have an XM Roadie in my '03 9-5.
Thanks.
