You can calibrate it at each fillup (ideally you use the same station and pump) to make sure that what you actually use and what the SGII thinks you use are the same.
You can also calibrate speed readings by setting cruise control, and timing mile markers to compare against the SGII and dashboard speedo.
Details for both are in the manual, I believe.
The 9999mpg is the deceleration fuel cut-off. You're traveling while using no fuel. On the 4 cylinders, if you are above 1600rpm and 3rd gear or above, T7 cuts off fuel. it kicks back in again at 1250rpm. The SGII detects this quite nicely in my linear wagon, manual trans.
As for the 167mpg instant, 75mi/hr / .45gal/hr (engine idling in N while you coast) = 167mpg instant. This is why pulse and glide works. Sweet, huh?
Anyway, it seems that everything you describe is quite normal. Fuel economy might be on the highish side but a few tanks will even that out. It turns out my SID reports 2-3mpg optimistic against the SGII and fillup records.
Oh, I have
RPM MPH
GPH MPG
and stuck mine right on the steering column.
